Compassionate caregivers inspire breast cancer survivor to support other patients

Even though Katie Ayres had a lifelong fear of medical care, the clinical staff at the IU Health Joe and Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center changed her mind. Her surgeon and care team demonstrated compassion that she relied on as she progressed through her cancer journey. After she completed treatment and "rang the bell," she and her husband, Trent, pledged a gift to IU Health Foundation to support the Schwarz Patient Assistance Fund. The fund provides transportation, covers medication gaps and meets other needs identified by care teams.

"I want to make sure other Hoosiers facing a cancer journey like mine have the best possible care," she says.
