Donors help patients fighting cancer push through their toughest days

When Jennifer Butcher was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2022, her journey to healing began with a 25-mile drive from her home in Avoca, Indiana, to IU Health Bloomington Hospital. That distance wasn’t just measured in miles. It was measured in courage, resilience and the quiet generosity of donors who made her trek a little easier.

At hir first treatment, Jennifer’s cancer navigator handed her a gas card. It was a simple gesture, but for Jennifer, it meant everything.

“I wasn’t able to work at the time, and that little gift made a huge difference,” she said. “It was a great blessing to our family.”

Jennifer’s care was complex. In addition to breast cancer, she lives with type 2b von Willebrand disease, a rare bleeding disorder that prevents her blood from clotting, Her oncologist chose a lumpectomy over a mastectomy to reduce the risk of complications from surgery.

Throughout her treatment, Jennifer found strength in the people around her. “I built a strong relationship with the IU Health staff,” Jennifer said. “They’re forever friendships. I love them like family.”

Today, Jennifer is celebrating clear scans and a renewed sense of life. She credits her family, her faith and the compassionate care she received at IU Health for helping her through.

“I can’t say enough great things about them,” she said. “Their support – and the help of things like the gas cards – are what pushed us to get through such a trying time in life.”
