Generosity supports specialized care and equipment at Neuro Rehab and Robotics clinic

No, the robots aren’t taking over. But they are taking a logical role in helping IU Health patients receiving treatment for traumatic brain injuries, strokes and neurological disorders. Thanks in part to IU Health Foundation donors, the professionals in Rehabilitation Services at IU Health Neuroscience Center are able to make the most of their expertise and compassion by letting robots do what robots do best.

“The benefit of robotics is you get consistent, repetitive therapeutic intervention,” said Kathryn Gyves, Team Lead for neuroscience rehabilitation services. “It’s controlled. You get the same application each time. Neuroplasticity is driven by high reps – high intensity and consistency.” Meanwhile, Gyves and her team can focus on doing what they do best: delivering expert care to patients recovering from traumatic brain injuries and strokes, as well as those suffering from neurological disorders like cerebral palsy or Parkinson’s disease. “We are highly trained and skilled in treating patients with all different neurological disorders, Gyves said. “Our team is the best of the best, the ones who really know how to help improve and treat people who have these disorders or diagnoses.”

The advanced technology at the rehab and robotics clinic plays a key role in helping patients regain or maintain their mobility. Philanthropy allows team members to replace aging equipment and be sure they have access to the latest high-tech tools. “Technology is constantly changing,” said Dave Schroeder, manager of rehabilitation services at IU Health. “Equipment runs its course. The average lifespan is typically 10 years. This clinic is nearly 14 years old, so we’re reaching the point where some of this equipment needs to be upgraded.”

Donor gifts also ensure that the rehabilitation team stays trained on new tools and knows how to deliver the greatest impact for patients. “Continuing education is huge for us to be able to provide the highest level of care,” Gyves said. “This team really values the opportunity to advance their knowledge and keep up with the latest technology.”
