Gifts lower barriers: Physician sees philanthropy as key to healthcare equity
Intrigued in med school by the impact social determinants of health can have on liver disease, IU Health gastroenterologist Lauren Nephew, MD, has a side gig to treating patients with liver cancer. She has worked to develop systems that improve healthcare outcomes by addressing barriers to care, especially those related to race. She’s found that philanthropy is essential to uncovering and addressing those barriers.
